How to Dispose of Garbage and Recycling at Finley Forest

See also: the detailed disposal guide. It has a great list of disposal item types and what to do with them.

Please do your part: Waste disposal is a costly item for the community. Finley Forest residents have access to several recycling centers throughout the community, plus a large item disposal area, corrugated cardboard bin, as well as conveniently-located trash dumpsters.

Some residents, whether newly moved in or just never clued in, may not know that specific disposal methods are in fact required for different kinds of items. Here is a detailed guide to help. If you're wondering about a specific item, you can do a text search in your web browser for the item -- but if you don't find it, please do read through since it might be described with different words or a different spelling.

Improper waste disposal adds incremental costs that can easily be avoided. Please be attentive and considerate and follow the guidelines posted below to dispose of household trash, recycling, large items, yard waste, and hazardous materials. And you will also be doing your part to protect the environment!

Why we care so much about what goes into our dumpsters

If our trash pickup service (Orange County Solid Waste) finds banned items in the dumpster, they put an orange sticker on the dumpster. This means it will not be emptied until the banned items are removed.

We pay significant penalties when corrugated cardboard is found in the regular trash dumpsters.

Many of you may not be aware that these penalties are significant enough that, through our homeowners’ association, we pay an individual contractor to climb into the trash dumpsters before pick-up day. This contractor is paid to remove items which are banned from the trash, such as corrugated cardboard, construction scraps and furniture.

Further, if a corrugated cardboard box is improperly disposed of and traced back to your unit, the homeowners’ association may assess you a fine.

Doing it right:

Where to recycle in Finley Forest: Recycling areas with large green dumpsters for cardboard and blue cans designated for newspapers, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars, and aluminum/steel/tin cans are located throughout the community near the front or back of some parking lots.

The three large green dumpsters for corrugated cardboard are located at:

  • Summerwalk Circle between buildings 27 and 28
  • Summerwalk Circle in front of large item holding area (near unit 457; second parking lot on outside of circle after turning left onto Summerwalk from Springberry)
  • Brookberry Circle – back of parking lot nearest Finley Forest Drive intersection

Please do not leave your recycling or garbage outside the designated bins. Just because someone else may have dumped something improper in a bin, please do not take this as a sign that it is acceptable.

What not to put in: Often the recycling bins are found to contain items that should not be put in them. You might transport your recycling in a plastic bag, but please DO NOT put these in the recycle bins. Empty the items out of the bags. Paper bags can be put in the corrugated cardboard dumpster, but plastic bags should be disposed of in the trash dumpsters.

When Orange County Solid Waste brings recycling to the disposal area, each type of recycled item is dumped out onto concrete slabs for sorting and then baling or packaging for market. Items that don’t belong in the recycling are pulled out using manual labor, which makes recycling more expensive for everyone.

Large item disposal: A small fenced-in area to dispose of large items can be found at the back of the parking lot near 457 Summerwalk Circle (second parking lot on outside of circle after turning left onto Summerwalk from Springberry). Large items include furniture, mattresses, appliances, and construction scraps. If you need assistance to carry items to this area, please contact the management office. The management office will arrange for assistance free of charge.
