Trash and Recycling Disposal Guide

Household Trash

use dumpsters distributed around community near all units

YES - Bag and place in dumpsters.

Kitchen, bathroom, & other household trash;
Pet waste appropriately bagged and sealed;
Cardboard contaminated with food, oil, paint;
Waxed cardboard and paperboard (e.g. food packaging);
Styrofoam;
Junk mail.

NO - Put in recycling or large item holding area.

Plastic, Glass, Tin, Paper, Corrugated Cardboard - See Recycle;

Furniture, Appliance, Construction scraps - See Large Item Holding Area;

Hazardous Waste;

Yard Waste (put in woods or make arrangements with management office).

Large Items

The large item holding area is located on Summerwalk Circle. After turning left onto Summerwalk from Springberry, it is at back of second parking lot on the left (outside of the circle).

Contact the management office if you need assistance carrying items.

YES - take to large item holding area

Furniture - Indoor or Outdoor;
Mattresses;
Appliances, Lamps;
Computers and Monitors;
Other Electronics;
Construction Scraps including Carpets and Flooring;
Scrap Wood and Metal; Pallets and Crates;
Plastic Tubs and Buckets (e.g. large kitty litter containers);
Tires/ Automotive Parts;
Hazardous Waste if you do not drop off at the collection site off Eubanks Road.

NO

Household Trash;
Recycling;
Yard Waste.

Corrugated Cardboard

Corrugated cardboard is made up of several layers and has a wavy middle layer. Moving and mailing boxes are usually made from corrugated cardboard.

Flatten boxes. CANNOT be disposed in TRASH (will result in $ Fine). Finley Forest's three cardboard recycling locations are described in the main disposal article.

YES - recycle in appropriate bin

Corrugated Cardboard Boxes;
Brown Paper Bags.

NO - put in trash or other recycle where noted

Pizza Boxes;
Mixed Paper (put in trash or recycle at drop-off locations only);
Mixed Paper includes: Junk Mail, Cereal Boxes, gabletop juice/milk cartons, School Papers, Paper Packaging, 6 or 12-Pack Boxes, Cardboard Tubes.

Plastic

Empty, rinse, stomp flat; discard caps and lids.

YES - recycle in appropriate bin

ALL plastic bottles #1-7 (but not all recyclable containers)

Containers MUST have NECK SMALLER than base

Examples:

shampoo, laundry, bleach bottles;
peanut butter jars;
ketchup, mustard bottles;
soda, water, milk jugs;
kitty litter containers with pourable neck smaller than base.

NO - Put in trash or other recycle where noted

Caps, Lids and Drinking Straws;
Cups - Plastic or Styrofoam;
Prescription containers;
Food Tubs, such as yogurt, margarine, sour cream containers (all containers with no neck);
Take-out Trays;
Buckets and pails;
Bottles that contained hazardous material (e.g. automotive fluids, pesticides);
Kitty Litter containers/ pails with no neck;
Plastic Toys.

Glass

Rinse, labels OK, discard lids.

YES - recycle in appropriate bin

Bottles and Jars
Clear, brown, green, blue - sorted by bin

NO - Put in trash or other recycle where noted

Lids;
Dishes or Ceramics;
Drinking Glasses;
Pyrex;
Window Glass;
Lightbulbs;
Mirrors.

Metal Cans

Must be empty, tuck lids inside food cans & flatten.

YES - recycle in appropriate bin

Aluminum and steel (tin) Food and Beverage Cans

Examples: - soda, beer, soup, vegetable, pet food cans - juice cans - cookie tins

Aerosol Spray Cans [ Empty but do NOT FLATTEN; Do remove plastic cap]

Examples: - cooking spray, hair spray, cleaners, spray paint

NO - Put in TRASH or Other recycle Where Noted

Aluminum Foil;
Aluminum Trays;
Metal Pans;
Scrap Metal (Put in large item holding area if big).

Newspapers

clean and dry

YES - recycle in appropriate bin

Newspapers;
Inserts;
Phone Books;
Glossy Magazines;
Catalogs.

NO - Put in trash or other recycle where noted

Brown Paper Bags (or can put in Corrugated Cardboard);
Plastic Bags;
Rubber Bands;
Mixed Paper (put in Trash or Recycle at Drop-Off Locations only); Mixed Paper includes: Junk Mail, Cereal Boxes, Gabletop Juice/Milk Cartons, School Papers, Paper Packaging, 6 or 12-Pack Boxes, Cardboard Tubes;

Yard Waste

Dump leaves, shrub clippings, dead plants in a wooded area to decompose; alternatively call the management office to make arrangements for pickup by our landscape contractor.

Hazardous Waste

Please do not discard Hazardous Waste in the regular garbage. If necessary, please dispose of at the Large Item Holding area for proper sorting and pickup/disposal by the contractor hired by Finley Forest.

Orange County Solid Waste Management collects household hazardous waste (HHW) at the Orange County Landfill on Eubanks Rd. six days per week. Collection hours are every Monday through Friday from 10:00 am- 6:00 pm and every Saturday from 7:30 am- 12:00 noon.

Residents bringing HHW while the Landfill is open should be prepared to stop at the scalehouse first. Weekdays after 4:00 p.m. when the landfill is closed, the gate will be open for residents to go directly to the HHW collection facility only. No other landfill services are available during this time.

Hazardous waste includes items like:

Lawn, garden, and pool chemicals;
Household cleaners and chemicals;
All batteries (also accepted at Solid Waste Convenience Centers);
Paint;
Sealant ;
Solvents;
Aerosol cans that are not empty;
Anti-freeze and other automotive fluids;
Fluorescent light bulbs;
Thermostats;
Tanks from compressed gasses.


Special Notes

You can now recycle used carpet thanks to the nonprofit Carpet America Recovery Effort (www.carpetrecovery.org). You might try contacting the Foam Recycling Center in Raleigh, 452-8070. According to a recent (2007) Independent Weekly article, carpet recycling costs about 5 to 25 cents per pound.
